Support for Non-Japanese Residents
Establishment of a Multilingual Disaster Support Center and Registration of Disaster Language Volunteers
To support non-Japanese residents, who may not be able to obtain necessary information due to differences in language and customs, Sendai City establishes a multilingual disaster support center, which is operated by Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association, at times of major disaster.
It also registers disaster language volunteers through which it offers cooperation and assistance. As part of their training, volunteers participate in community disaster prevention training and provide interpreting services for non-Japanese participants.

Risk Reduction Training Session
Disaster Preparedness Awareness for Non-Japanese Residents
To raise the disaster risk reduction awareness of non-Japanese residents and facilitate smoother support activities at times of disaster, we transmit disaster prevention information in the form of multilingual pamphlets and videos, and implement disaster prevention drills and training for non-Japanese residents who have only recently arrived in the country.
Moreover, with the cooperation of FM radio stations, non-Japanese residents appear on disaster risk reduction programs to share their experiences and introduce disaster preparation initiatives.

DRR Lectures at Japanese Language Class
Targeted at foreign residents who learn at Japanese language schools, the Disaster Risk Reduction Training Sessions have been run since 2015. The sessions, which are taught in an easy-to-understand format and complete with interpreters, include content such as providing the participants with Japanese which is used at the time of disasters, teaching them how to read hazard maps for wind and water disasters, and providing information on evacuation orders issued by the City.
