Holding International Conferences

In Sendai City, various international conferences in the field of disaster risk reduction has been held, including the 2015 Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015, organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). Through these conferences, Sendai shares the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake with the world while also helping to raise disaster awareness among local residents.

In the autumn of 2027, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) is scheduled to be held in Sendai City. The APMCDR is a regional conference organized by UNDRR to review progress in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The conference is expected to bring together approximately 5,000 participants from around 60 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. Through this conference, Sendai City aims to further strengthen its international presence in the field of disaster risk reduction and contribute to enhancing disaster awareness throughout the city.

World Bosai Forum

The World Bosai Forum is an international conference that has been held regularly in Sendai City since 2017 organized by the Steering Committee led by the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) of Tohoku University.
World Bosai Forum is distinctive for having programs in which a wide range of participants including citizens are welcomed.

Building on the sharing of knowledge related to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the creation of concrete disaster risk reduction solutions, the aim is to promote the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 and mainstream “Bosai” from Sendai City to the world.

Attending International Conferences on Disaster Risk Reduction

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sendai City has shared information on the current state of reconstruction, as well as the experiences and lessons learned from the disaster, in order to contribute to disaster risk reduction around the world as a disaster-affected city.
In particular, with the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction being held in Sendai City and the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Sendai City has actively participated in international conferences hosted by organizations such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), disseminating information on initiatives taken by the city.
Examples include the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
