Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sendai has contributed to disaster risk reduction around the world as the disaster-affected areas. The city shares information about the current state of reconstruction and conveys experiences and lessons of the disaster.
In particular, with the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction being held in Sendai and the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Sendai has actively participated in international conferences hosted by organizations such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), disseminating information on initiatives taken by the city.
Examples include the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Asia Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. Additionally, the city has been communicating its teachings and efforts to a wide audience both domestically and aboard using pamphlets, newsletters, and the internet.
In addition to giving presentations at conferences both in Japan and overseas, the city enthusiastically hosts visits from companies, stakeholders involved in disaster risk reduction locally and globally, and other organizations such as the Training Center for Gender & Disaster Risk Reduction, sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Since 2020, such visits have declined in number due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, though information is still being shared via the internet.
