Outcome summary of the 2022 Sendai Symposium for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Future

The City of Sendai held the 2022 Sendai Symposium for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Future – Link to the Future of City of Trees – Our Disaster Prevention and Environment – on March 5, 2022.

7. Outcome Summary

The symposium which was conducted under the theme “Link to the Future of City of Trees – Our Disaster Prevention and Environment” with programs for learning and considering Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in a broader sense with various themes, environmental issues such as changing climates, and flood disasters, in addition to recovery and reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

At the symposium, presentations were conducted under various themes, such as initiatives of DRR for foreign residents and women. The booths and poster exhibition, introduced activities by civil groups and students, and proposed issue resolutions by the private sectors. It gave opportunities to deliver messages and exchange to overcome generational and societal positions. Stage programs such as an ethical and sustainable themed fashion show was conducted, and workshops were also held such as experience of flying a drone for children. Participants from children to adults learned about DRR and environment in an enjoyable manner.
Due to COVID-19 infection control measures, the opening and closing programs were not conducted on-site. Messages from the Mayor of City of Sendai, KOHRI Kazuko, and MATSUOKA Yuki, the Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Office in Japan, were published on the website of the 2022 Sendai Symposium for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Future and video was aired at the site.
At the closing ceremony, presentations conducted by workshop participants who are assessing the future of “Disaster-Resilient and Environmentally-Friendly City, the City of Sendai,” overviewed by Professor ONO Yuichi, IRIDeS of Tohoku University, affirmed the importance of linking DRR to the future and delivering our messages to the world.
