SENDAI -Towards a Disaster-Resilient and Environmentally-Friendly City

Target 4 Measures to Reduce Disaster Damage to Critical Infrastructure Related to Health and Educational and Disruption of Essential Utilities

Since the 1978 Miyagi-ken-oki earthquake we have been working to improve the earthquake resilience of important buildings and improve disaster countermeasures for essential utilities in Sendai. These measures proved effective in the Great East Japan Earthquake, with few buildings collapsing due to the earthquake. Although essential utilities supplies were cut off in some areas, we were able to avoid widespread and prolonged damage and quickly commenced recovery and reconstruction work in the city.
We are continuing to improve these disaster measures even further to create a safer and more reliable city, and we are taking on new measures based on our experiences and the lessons we have learned.
