SENDAI -Towards a Disaster-Resilient and Environmentally-Friendly City

Target 3 Efforts to Reduce Direct Disaster Economic Loss

We have estimated and analyzed the cost of damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in Sendai, and we are using this information in our measures against future disasters.
As 40% of the approximate 1.3829 trillion yen of damage (September 30, 2015) was to residences, residential land etc., thus we have been making residential land safer and improving the earthquake resistance of residences. We have also taken both structural and non-structural measures at city facilities and other public facilities to minimize potential effects on both the economy and on citizens in the region, as well as creating new regional economic activity so we can continue to reduce direct disaster economic loss.
